Scientists have begun exploring the previously inaccessible waters around the Queen Elizabeth Islands and western Tuvaijuittuq in Canada’s High Arctic, now navigable due to melting sea ice. A Canadian research icebreaker, the CCGS Amundsen, embarked on a four-week mission to study Arctic sea ice, marking the first comprehensive research in this region. The expedition revealed a shift from multi-year to seasonal ice and emphasized the rapid warming of the Arctic, which is occurring four times faster than the global average. Community engagement is crucial, as local residents possess valuable knowledge about changing ice conditions and are encouraged to participate in future studies.
