Firearm Compensation Program Delayed Until January 2026
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The federal Liberal government has postponed the launch of its compensation program for banned firearms owners from fall 2025 to January 2026, as confirmed by Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree. Initially piloted in Cape Breton, the program aims to ensure a smooth rollout nationwide after addressing technical issues. Despite low participation in the pilot, which saw only 10 to 22 firearms collected, the government is committed to its longstanding promise to eliminate “assault-style” weapons. Gun-control advocates continue to push for the program’s success and further restrictions on certain firearms popular in Indigenous communities.
