EU to ban Russian energy imports by 2028

The European Union has approved a draft regulation to phase out Russian oil and gas imports by January 2028, amidst concerns over funding the war in Ukraine.

Almost all EU energy ministers voted in favor, requiring new gas contracts to end by 2026 and existing ones by 2028, although Hungary and Slovakia opposed the initiative. The proposal is part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on Russian energy, with further sanctions on LNG imports being negotiated.
