Tonsil Surgery Death: Health NZ Review Finds Care Faults

A high-level review into the death of a 6-year-old boy, who collapsed at home after routine tonsil surgery, criticized the support provided to his grieving family but found the medical care standard acceptable. The child, who underwent the surgery at a private Southern Cross hospital in Auckland, died on April 7 at Starship Children’s Hospital after life support was turned off. The family was informed of complications during the surgery and the need for follow-up care.
