The Government’s new Speed Rule, increasing speed limits lowered in recent years, takes effect on July 1, despite a coalition of road safety groups seeking an injunction and judicial review to halt the change. 155 schools in Auckland will be impacted by the higher speeds, including Freemans Bay School, which is near a motorway on-ramp and serves children from nearby apartment blocks in the central city, where there is no safe walking route, leading to complex and dangerous streets that require most children to be accompanied by a caregiver daily.
