870 Sudanese Nationals Return Home from Egypt Under Voluntary Program

Sudan’s Al-Amal Committee for Voluntary Return announced the departure of 870 Sudanese nationals from Egypt to Sudan, facilitated by 30 buses from Cairo, Alexandria, and Aswan. This initiative, aimed at ensuring the safe and voluntary return of citizens, includes university professors and students from Sudanese institutions. The committee’s transport division head, Maher al-Zein Ahmed, revealed ongoing collaborations with local businesspeople and humanitarian organizations to support returning convoys. Since the onset of the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in 2023, over 1.2 million Sudanese have fled to Egypt, where about 5 million were already residing. The committee has successfully organized the repatriation of approximately 50,000 Sudanese, with the number of returnees steadily increasing amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has resulted in one of the worst humanitarian crises globally, with estimates indicating that over 13 million people have been displaced and tens of thousands killed since the fighting began. Egypt has become a key refuge, housing millions of Sudanese fleeing violence. The Al-Amal Committee’s efforts to facilitate voluntary returns reflect a growing response to the crisis, as Sudanese nationals seek to reunite with families and re-establish their lives amid deteriorating conditions in Sudan. The situation underscores the broader implications of conflict-driven migration in the region, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian support and stability.
