UAE citizens and residents invited to pledge allegiance to president

The United Arab Emirates has initiated a nationwide campaign encouraging citizens and residents to sign an online pledge of loyalty to President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Dubbed the “Pledge and Commitment,” the initiative was introduced by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, and is available through a dedicated website. The campaign commenced at an event in Abu Dhabi, attracting over 4,800 attendees, including citizens, students, and business leaders. Participants are invited to declare their allegiance to Sheikh Mohamed, who is described as a symbol of the nation’s honor and security. Those signing the pledge will receive a digital certificate of appreciation. The campaign will extend via various organizations and community events, aiming to bolster national identity amid ongoing regional tensions linked to the Israel-Gaza conflict and criticism of the UAE’s normalization with Israel.

Why It Matters

This campaign reflects the UAE’s ongoing emphasis on national unity and identity, particularly in a region marked by instability and conflict. The UAE has historically positioned itself as a model of stability and prosperity, yet faces challenges such as public dissent over its foreign policies, including its relations with Israel and involvement in regional conflicts. The timing of the loyalty pledge may also be seen as a response to recent geopolitical tensions, including perceived threats from Iran and the aftermath of the Israel-Gaza war, highlighting the UAE’s efforts to maintain domestic cohesion in a complex environment.
