A Texas woman, Mayra Velasquez, 42, was arrested on July 16 and charged with murder, linked to the 2012 homicide of her friend Irasema Chavez. Chavez, 32, was discovered in her home with over 100 stab wounds. Although investigators had various evidence, including surveillance footage and a blood sample, they struggled to identify a suspect for years. The Arlington Police Department enlisted the FBI’s Investigative Genetic Genealogy program in 2024, which helped identify Velasquez as a potential suspect after a lengthy investigation. Police obtained a DNA sample from Velasquez’s discarded trash in May, which matched the blood found at the crime scene. Statements made by Velasquez during an interview also contributed to the evidence leading to her arrest.

Why It Matters

This case highlights advancements in forensic science, particularly the role of genetic genealogy in solving cold cases that have remained unsolved for years. The use of DNA evidence and investigative techniques, such as running samples through genealogical databases, has been increasingly effective in resolving long-standing criminal investigations. The murder of Irasema Chavez, which had been unresolved for over 14 years, underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in obtaining actionable leads and the emotional impact on victims’ families. As techniques evolve, more cold cases may see renewed attention and resolution, emphasizing the importance of continued investment in forensic technology.
