Legal Challenge Against IHRA Definition of Antisemitism in UK Court

A British rights group, Right to Protest, has announced that Dr. Ranjeet Brar, a vascular surgeon, is initiating a judicial review against the misuse of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism by public institutions, particularly King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Dr. Brar was suspended on April 6, 2026, following remarks he made at a memorial for children killed in a school strike in Iran, where he criticized Israeli actions in Gaza and the policies of the Israeli, US, and British governments. He contends that the IHRA definition was improperly invoked to justify his suspension, a situation that he argues reflects a broader trend of penalizing individuals for expressing criticism of Israel. Farani Taylor Solicitors will represent Dr. Brar in this legal challenge, which aims to clarify the application of the IHRA definition to safeguard freedom of expression as outlined in Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Right to Protest has launched a CrowdJustice campaign to support the legal costs, aiming to raise £30,000.

Why It Matters

The IHRA definition of antisemitism has been adopted by various public bodies in the UK, raising concerns about its impact on free speech, particularly regarding criticisms of Israel. Critics argue that the definition is being misused to silence legitimate political discourse, affecting healthcare professionals, academics, and activists. This case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding discussions of Israeli policies and the implications for civil liberties and human rights advocacy in the UK. The outcomes of such legal challenges could influence how public institutions navigate the balance between combating antisemitism and protecting free speech rights.
