Sudan recalls envoy to Ethiopia following drone attack claims

Sudan has recalled its ambassador to Ethiopia for consultations following accusations that Ethiopia was involved in a drone attack on Khartoum International Airport. On Monday, Sudanese air defenses reportedly shot down drones targeting the airport, resulting in explosions and smoke in the vicinity. This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has intensified since the outbreak of hostilities in April 2023. Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohi El-Din Salem publicly stated that the attack was a result of “UAE-Ethiopian drone aggression,” asserting that evidence points to its origin from Ethiopia. This accusation follows earlier claims by Sudan that the Rapid Support Forces had launched drone attacks from Ethiopian territory, marking a deepening of tensions between Sudan and Ethiopia.

Why It Matters

The conflict in Sudan has escalated significantly since April 2023, leading to increased regional instability. Sudan has historically had a complex relationship with Ethiopia, especially concerning border disputes and military engagements. The allegations of Ethiopian involvement in drone attacks on Sudanese territory represent a serious diplomatic strain, potentially affecting regional alliances and security dynamics. Furthermore, the involvement of external actors like the United Arab Emirates, accused of supporting the Rapid Support Forces, complicates the situation, as it highlights the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict in Sudan and the Horn of Africa.
