Gaza municipalities warn of impending humanitarian and health crisis

The Union of Gaza Strip Municipalities has issued a dire warning about an impending humanitarian and environmental crisis as essential municipal services in Gaza are on the brink of collapse. Restrictions imposed by Israel have severely limited the entry of crucial supplies, including industrial oils, diesel, spare parts, and equipment necessary for the operation of water, sewage, and waste management facilities. The shortage of industrial oils is particularly critical, as it jeopardizes the functioning of generators and water wells that supply over 140,000 cubic meters of water daily. Additionally, the municipalities are at risk of halting waste collection operations, which currently manage over 3,000 cubic meters of waste each day, potentially leading to increased health risks from waste accumulation. The union holds Israeli authorities responsible for exacerbating the situation for the 2.4 million residents of Gaza, warning that without immediate action, public health will be severely threatened.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict and blockade have resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, where approximately 1.5 million people are displaced and living under dire conditions. Since October 2023, nearly 73,000 Palestinians have died, and over 173,000 have been injured, with a significant proportion being women and children. Restrictions on essential goods, including food, medicine, and housing materials, have further compounded the crisis, making it increasingly difficult for local authorities to provide basic services. The inability to maintain water and sewage systems poses a direct threat to public health, potentially leading to outbreaks of disease in a region already facing severe challenges.
