Tunisia’s opposition leader Jaouhar Ben Mbarek is on his 17th day of a hunger strike in Belli Prison, demanding his freedom. He co-founded the National Salvation Front and has been imprisoned since April on charges of “conspiracy against state security.” Ben Mbarek reported being assaulted for refusing food and has received support from various political figures also on hunger strikes. The government’s crackdown on dissent has led to the detention of numerous opposition members since early 2023, which President Kais Saied defends as necessary for state security.
