Bahrain Shura Council backs juvenile justice reforms amid abuse allegations

Bahrain’s Shura Council has approved significant amendments to juvenile and alternative sentencing laws to enhance rehabilitative justice and reduce incarceration reliance. The reforms, revising the 2021 Restorative Justice Law for Children and the 2017 Alternative Sentencing Law, allow courts more flexibility in imposing non-custodial penalties, such as psychological treatment and home probation, subject to monitoring by the Child Protection Centre and the Interior Ministry. These changes await ratification by King Hamad and include provisions for regular reviews of rehabilitation progress every six months.
