In a study on norovirus susceptibility, it was found that individuals with blood type B are more resistant to the bug, while those with blood types A, AB, and O are more likely to become ill. This is due to the presence of oligosaccharides on red blood cells and intestinal cells, which the virus attaches to in order to infect individuals. Approximately 20% of the European-derived population do not produce the H1-antigen, making them less likely to get sick from norovirus.
