X is discontinuing its revenue-sharing program for content creators and will introduce a new Original Content Rewards program starting September 8th. To qualify, creators must have at least 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users over the past 90 days. Under the new program, creators can earn revenue based on “qualified impressions” from Premium subscribers viewing their original content. Original content includes user-generated reporting, analysis, videos, photos, and more, while simply repurposing others’ content will not qualify. The initiative aims to discourage exploitation of loopholes and encourage authentic creativity, according to Allegra Jacchia, Senior Product Manager at SpaceXAI. Current participants in the revenue-sharing model will continue to earn until September 7th.
Why It Matters
This change reflects a broader trend in social media platforms aiming to ensure that content creators are incentivized to produce original material rather than recycling existing content. Revenue-sharing programs have evolved significantly, especially under new leadership, as companies seek to establish sustainable models that reward genuine engagement. The shift to focusing on “qualified impressions” highlights the importance of subscriber interaction, a factor that may influence content strategies moving forward. As platforms like X adapt their monetization policies, it affects how creators approach content production and audience engagement.
