Zee Entertainment in Talks to Broadcast World Cup in India

India’s Zee Entertainment is negotiating with FIFA to secure broadcasting rights for the 2026 World Cup in the country. This development follows a stalemate between FIFA and a joint venture of Reliance and Disney, just weeks before the tournament begins on June 11. FIFA initially sought $100 million for the rights to both the 2026 and 2030 World Cups but later reduced its expectations to around $60 million, significantly higher than the $20 million offered by the Reliance-Disney partnership led by Mukesh Ambani. Sony also explored the opportunity but ultimately declined to bid for the rights. FIFA has already established broadcasting agreements in over 180 territories worldwide.

Why It Matters

India’s engagement with the FIFA World Cup is significant, as it accounted for 2.9% of global linear TV reach during the 2022 Qatar World Cup, making it the second-largest audience after China. The tournament saw over 745 million fans in India engaging with the event across various media, with television viewership placing India among the top ten countries, surpassing traditional football powerhouses like Germany and France. The negotiations for broadcasting rights illustrate the increasing value of Indian audiences within the global sports media landscape, highlighting the competitive nature of acquiring high-profile sports content.
