What You Need to Know
• The World Bank reported that the earthquakes in Venezuela caused an estimated $19.6 billion in physical damage.
• Approximately 47 percent of the damage affected residential buildings, according to the World Bank’s assessment.
• The earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in at least 5,000 fatalities and left 18,000 homeless.

The World Bank has stated that the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, 2026, caused an estimated $19.6 billion in physical damage. Susana Cordeiro Guerra, the World Bank Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean, noted that 47 percent of this damage was to residential buildings, while 27 percent affected infrastructure and 26 percent impacted non-residential structures. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, resulted in at least 5,000 deaths and nearly 17,000 injuries, with an additional 18,000 people left homeless amid ongoing economic challenges. The World Bank emphasized the need for reliable data to aid recovery efforts, as 76 percent of the Venezuelan population was already living in poverty prior to the disaster.

Why It Matters

The earthquakes in Venezuela highlight the country’s ongoing struggles with economic mismanagement and the effects of U.S. sanctions. The significant physical damage exacerbates the existing humanitarian crisis, as many residents were already vulnerable. The World Bank’s assessment aims to guide recovery efforts, but the path forward remains uncertain amid limited financial resources and international support. Historical context shows that Venezuela has faced severe economic challenges, making recovery from such disasters increasingly complex.
