Work-related illness costing UK economy £400m a week, union analysis says

A recent analysis found that work-related illness is costing the UK economy over £400 million per week, with 34 million cumulative sick days lost due to ill-health since 2010. As new legislation on employment rights is set to return to the Commons, the TUC argues that increased safeguards for workers are essential to improve economic growth and productivity, countering concerns from business leaders about potential negative impacts. TUC general secretary Paul Nowak emphasizes the importance of cracking down on exploitative practices like zero-hours contracts to boost workers’ health, well-being, and productivity, ultimately helping more people stay in work.
