Work experience system designed to address NEET crisis is ineffective, report finds

Young people in the UK seeking work experience are facing significant challenges, according to a recent report from a work charity. The report reveals that 74% of schools struggle to organize work placements, while nearly half of businesses cite time constraints and resource limitations as barriers to offering experiences. This is concerning as short-term placements are crucial for helping young people understand essential skills needed in the workforce and can be more valued by employers than formal qualifications. Chef Tom Kerridge emphasized the importance of these opportunities in sparking interest in young workers. The report also highlighted a growing crisis, with over a million individuals aged 16 to 24 not engaged in education, employment, or training (NEET) in the UK. Forecasts suggest that without intervention, this number could rise significantly in the coming years.

Why It Matters

The challenges in providing work experience for young people are particularly pressing given the increasing NEET rates in the UK. Data from the Office for National Statistics indicates that the number of NEET individuals surpassed one million in early 2023, raising concerns about the long-term implications for the youth labor market. Studies have shown that young people engaged with the workforce are significantly less likely to be NEET, highlighting the importance of structured work experience programs. The government’s commitment to creating a million opportunities through its Youth Guarantee program, backed by £2.5 billion, aims to address these barriers and is crucial for improving youth employment outcomes.
