A woman named Jen Higgins, 49, tragically lost her life when a decaying beech tree fell on her while she was walking with her husband on Barlow Moor Road in West Didsbury, Manchester, last August. The couple heard a loud crack as a third of the tree’s canopy broke off, leaving them no time to react. Jen suffered multiple traumatic chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, Gawen, sustained minor injuries. The inquest revealed that the tree had not been pruned for approximately 15 years, contributing to its decay. Jen’s family expressed their heartbreak over her death, describing her as a beloved member of the community with a strong business presence. The assistant coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death, labeling the incident as a tragic accident.

Why It Matters

Tree-related accidents can highlight the importance of regular maintenance and inspection of urban foliage, particularly in residential areas. In this case, the beech tree had not been pruned for over a decade, leading to its deterioration and eventual collapse. Such incidents can prompt discussions about public safety, environmental management, and community responsibility concerning tree care. Understanding the risks associated with neglected trees is crucial, as similar accidents have occurred in various locations, underlining the need for proactive measures to prevent future tragedies.
