A 24-year-old woman, Kelcie Reed, appeared in Bristol Magistrates’ Court facing charges related to the death of her teenage cousin, Morgan Dorsett, who was fatally mauled by an XL bully dog named Prince on February 26, 2023. Reed is accused of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control, resulting in death. Dorsett, 19, suffered severe bites to her neck during the incident that occurred at a flat in Withywood, Bristol. Following the attack, the dog was euthanized. Reed was visibly emotional during the proceedings and did not enter a plea, with the case adjourned to Bristol Crown Court, where she is scheduled to appear on May 27. As part of her conditional bail, she is prohibited from owning or controlling any dogs.

Why It Matters

This case highlights ongoing concerns about dog attacks and public safety, particularly involving breeds like XL bullies. In recent years, incidents of severe dog attacks have prompted discussions about responsible pet ownership and potential legislative changes regarding dangerous dog breeds. The legal outcomes of cases like Reed’s can influence public perception and policy surrounding dog ownership and animal control laws, as well as the responsibilities of pet owners in preventing harm to others.
