WNBA expansion introduced two new teams, the Portland Fire and the Toronto Tempo, who finalized their initial rosters on Friday. The Fire selected 10 players from the pool of unprotected players, including first overall pick Bridget Carleton from the Minnesota Lynx. The Tempo, with 11 selections, chose Julie Allemand from the Los Angeles Sparks as their second overall pick. Each team could select only one unrestricted free agent and will have the exclusive ability to offer these players a supermax contract. Both teams completed trades with the Chicago Sky prior to the draft, impacting their selection options. The Fire will be led by former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Alex Sarama, while Sandy Brondello, previously with the New York Liberty, will coach the Tempo.
Why It Matters
The WNBA expansion reflects the league’s growth and increasing popularity, with the addition of teams in new markets like Portland and Toronto. Historically, the league has seen fluctuations in team numbers, and this expansion is a significant step in enhancing its visibility and reach, particularly in Canada. The establishment of the Toronto Tempo marks the first time a Canadian city has had a WNBA team, potentially broadening the league’s fan base and influencing the development of women’s basketball in the region. These roster selections and coaching appointments are crucial as both teams aim to establish competitive identities and contribute to the league’s overall evolution.
