Democrats select candidates in two Wisconsin House districts as GOP primary winner emerges

National Democrats are targeting two Wisconsin congressional districts currently held by Republicans for the upcoming November elections: the 1st and 3rd Congressional Districts. In the 1st District, Democrat Mitchell Berman will challenge incumbent Republican Rep. Bryan Steil, who has a significant cash advantage with $6.1 million on hand. Berman, a nurse, won the Democratic primary decisively but is vying for a seat that has not had a Democratic representative in over 30 years. Meanwhile, in the 3rd District, a rematch is set between Democrat Rebecca Cooke and Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden, with Cooke having a slight fundraising edge of approximately $8.6 million compared to Van Orden’s $7.5 million. The 7th Congressional District is also noteworthy, where Republican Michael Alfonso, son-in-law of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, won the GOP primary; the Democratic race remains undecided.

Why It Matters

These elections are significant as they could impact the balance of power in Congress. The 1st District has not elected a Democrat in over three decades, making it a critical target for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The 3rd District’s rematch highlights the competitive nature of Wisconsin politics, particularly as Cooke aims to reclaim a seat lost by a narrow margin in the previous election. Additionally, the outcome in the 7th District could influence future Republican strategies, especially given the historical shift of this seat from Democratic to Republican control in 2010. Overall, these races reflect broader national trends in party competition and voter sentiment in key battleground states.
