One of Ecuador’s most wanted drug lords, Wilmer Chavarria, also known as “Pipo,” was captured in Malaga, Spain, after faking his death in 2021. Chavarria, believed to lead the Los Lobos drug trafficking group, was involved in coordinating drug shipments and running extortion rackets while in Spain. Los Lobos, recently declared a terrorist organization by US authorities, has been linked to violent crimes in Ecuador, which has seen a surge in drug-related violence. His arrest coincides with a national referendum where Ecuadorians rejected a constitutional change to allow foreign military bases to combat drug trafficking.
