Australia has implemented a new safety law requiring all new electric vehicles (EVs) to emit an audible sound at low speeds, effective November 1. This Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) aims to enhance safety, particularly for the blind and visually impaired, who have experienced collisions with silent vehicles. Advocates, including Vision Australia’s Chris Edwards, emphasize that this legislation aligns Australia with global standards and will ultimately save lives and improve public safety. The law also extends to electric trucks and buses, ensuring safer streets for all.
