Effective December 1, the Alberta government has classified wild boars as “a pest in all circumstances,” imposing strict regulations on their captivity and hunting. It is now illegal to keep, buy, sell, or transport wild boars without a permit, and hunting is banned except for landowners culling them on their property. This decision aims to mitigate the ecological and agricultural threats posed by wild boars, including the risk of foreign animal diseases like African swine fever. The province is working with existing wild boar farms to either comply with new regulations or receive compensation for exiting the industry.
