The US Treasury has imposed sanctions on Iraq’s Deputy Oil Minister Ali Maarij al-Bahadly and several pro-Iran militia leaders for allegedly facilitating oil sales that violate US sanctions against Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent condemned the Iranian regime for exploiting Iraqi resources to fund terrorism. The sanctions coincide with ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, particularly regarding oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz. Neither Iraq nor Iran has commented on the allegations.
