The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) faces a 30% budget cut in 2026 and a $1.7bn funding gap through 2029, jeopardizing polio eradication efforts, according to WHO’s polio eradication director, Jamal Ahmed. The GPEI will focus on high-risk areas and collaborate with other health campaigns while scaling back in lower-risk regions due to reduced foreign aid.
