Baghdad, Iraq – Iraq’s new parliament is convening for the first time amid uncertainties about leadership, particularly concerning Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, whose powers were curtailed by the Federal Supreme Court. Al-Sudani’s efforts to secure alliances are complicated by a shift in power dynamics, with pro-Iran armed factions increasing their parliamentary presence. This change presents challenges for Iraq’s relations with the US and other nations, as Washington remains wary of these factions’ influence. The government formation process, historically lengthy, faces additional delays as the Shia Coordination Framework navigates the complexities of coalition-building amidst shifting political landscapes.
