The Trump administration, led by President Donald Trump, announced a plan on Monday involving North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) to secure a stake in Venezuela’s vast oil reserves. The Venezuelan government has granted NABEP 100-year concessions to drill in 17 oil fields, which contain approximately 65 billion barrels, about one-fifth of the country’s proven oil reserves. Under this agreement, the U.S. Defense Department will acquire a 35% stake in NABEP, while the U.S. State Department will have the option to purchase 20% of the company’s output at production cost. NABEP, managed by Alejandro Betancourt, aims to increase its production from over 200,000 barrels per day to more than 1 million barrels per day in the near future.
Why It Matters
This deal is significant as it marks a strategic move by the Trump administration to enhance U.S. energy resources while supporting the Venezuelan oil sector, which has suffered from years of underinvestment. The U.S. military’s removal of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January has opened opportunities for increased oil production in Venezuela, which claims to have the world’s largest oil reserves. The investment plan by NABEP, which includes up to $100 billion for new infrastructure, aims to revitalize the Venezuelan oil industry and potentially lower energy prices in the U.S.
