What is it with these people who are afraid of my dog?

In DEAR MISS MANNERS, the writer discusses the challenges of owning a large dog in a new area where people seem to be afraid of them. They recount instances where neighbors and passersby reacted fearfully to the dog, which was not a common experience in their previous home. The writer seeks advice on how to navigate this situation with grace and consideration for others’ feelings.
