Wetherspoons denies service to disabled man over suspected intoxication

A 22-year-old man with a rare neurological condition was denied service at a Wetherspoon’s pub in Caerphilly, Wales, after staff misinterpreted his symptoms as signs of intoxication. Matthew Ball was at the pub to commemorate his late mother’s birthday and presented his disability card upon entry, indicating he suffers from Niemann-Pick disease type C, which affects his speech, balance, and mobility. Despite showing this identification, he was refused a second drink when a different staff member mistakenly assumed he was drunk. His sister, Abby, emphasized that Matthew’s condition leads to symptoms that can be misread, advocating for better disability awareness among hospitality workers. Wetherspoon’s has since apologized for the incident and expressed a desire for Matthew and his family to return in the future.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the critical need for heightened disability awareness in the hospitality sector. Niemann-Pick disease type C is a rare genetic disorder with significant neurological effects, which can be misinterpreted as intoxication by untrained staff. Misunderstandings like this can lead to exclusion and discrimination against those with disabilities, further impacting their quality of life and access to public spaces. The response from Wetherspoon’s also underscores the importance of corporate responsibility in addressing customer service and staff training regarding disabilities.
