Saskatoon woman frustrated by WestJet’s wheelchair weight limit deadline

A Saskatoon woman, Desirée Parisien, faced an “excruciating” drive to British Columbia to visit her ailing mother-in-law after being prohibited from flying with her motorized wheelchair, which weighs 500 pounds. WestJet Airlines has a policy that restricts accessibility devices over 300 pounds on some flights. Parisien criticized this rule as discriminatory, stating that it creates significant barriers for travelers with disabilities. The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) recently ruled that WestJet must eliminate this weight restriction by June 30, 2027, acknowledging it as an “undue barrier.” However, Parisien expressed frustration that she must wait until next summer for the change, as she has previously traveled with her wheelchair on WestJet without issues. Another Saskatoon family, whose daughter also uses a heavy wheelchair, shared similar concerns regarding the airline’s policies.

Why It Matters

The issue of accessibility in air travel for individuals with disabilities has been a longstanding concern in Canada. The CTA’s decision to compel WestJet to remove the weight cap reflects a growing recognition of the need for equitable access to transportation for all. Historically, regulations surrounding air travel for passengers with disabilities have evolved, but instances of discrimination and barriers remain prevalent. The ruling highlights the importance of addressing such policies to ensure that individuals who require mobility aids can travel freely without undue restrictions, thereby promoting inclusivity and equal rights in public transportation.
