WestJet Airlines faces criticism for its policy that prohibits power wheelchairs exceeding 136 kilograms (300 pounds) on most of its aircraft, which advocates argue discriminates against individuals with disabilities. Manitoba resident Steven Fletcher experienced this firsthand when he was denied transport for his wheelchair, leading to medical issues. A 14-year-old girl from Saskatoon was also informed her wheelchair was too heavy for a family trip, despite previous travel with the same device. Advocates claim WestJet’s policy is unnecessarily restrictive, contrasting it with other airlines that maintain higher weight limits for mobility aids.
