The Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha passed the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill, with President Droupadi Murmu giving her assent on April 5, 2025. The bill aims to improve the administration and management of waqf properties in India, incorporating suggestions to benefit the Muslim community, despite strong opposition from the INDIA bloc. Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju highlighted the importance of the bill, which will now be renamed as the UMEED (Unified Waqf Management Empowerment Efficiency and Development) Bill.
