Employee dismissed for preventing shoplifting of Easter items

A Waitrose employee with 17 years of service was dismissed for intervening to stop a shoplifter from stealing a bag full of Lindt Gold Bunny Easter eggs at a Clapham Junction store in south London. Walker Smith, 54, noticed the thief, whom he identified as a repeat offender, while performing his duties and attempted to retrieve the stolen items. Despite the company’s policy against staff intervention during thefts, Smith acted out of frustration after witnessing ongoing thefts for years. Following the incident, he was reprimanded by management and subsequently fired, leading him to express concern about potential homelessness after recently moving into his own flat. Smith’s case highlights the increasing challenges faced by retail employees in dealing with shoplifting.

Why It Matters

Retail theft has surged in recent years, with incidents reaching a 20-year high; 530,643 shoplifting offenses were reported for the year ending March 2025. Campaigners suggest that actual theft figures are much higher due to underreporting, with estimates of up to 5.8 million incidents annually. The rise in retail crime has prompted calls for government intervention, as companies like Marks & Spencer have noted more organized and aggressive thefts. The retail workforce faces heightened risks, with unions warning of unacceptable levels of violence linked to shoplifting, making the safety and operational policies of stores critical to employee and customer security.
