Surf lifeguard rescues in the Eastern region have significantly increased, with 14 swimmers saved in just two days, bringing the total to 93 since October 25—over five times last year’s figure. Four of the recent rescues occurred outside lifeguard patrol hours and flagged zones. Despite a generally quiet beach scene, Whangamatā Beach saw about 2,500 visitors, contributing to four rescues, with three more at other nearby beaches.
