Clemson guard Efrem “Butta” Johnson has officially transferred to Virginia Tech, marking a significant addition for the Hokies ahead of the 2026-27 season. Johnson, a 6-foot-3 player from Huntsville, Alabama, previously played three seasons at UAB before joining Clemson, where he appeared in 35 games last year and averaged 6.3 points per game. He scored 11 points in his final game with the Tigers during an NCAA Tournament loss to Iowa. Over his collegiate career, Johnson has made 163 three-pointers and will provide a valuable perimeter option for head coach Mike Young. His transfer is part of a broader strategy as Virginia Tech has now signed seven transfers for the upcoming season.

Why It Matters

The transfer of Butta Johnson to Virginia Tech is part of a growing trend in college basketball where teams rely on transfer players to enhance their rosters. As programs look to remain competitive, especially in the context of the NCAA’s evolving landscape, such transfers have become crucial for filling gaps and improving team performance. Johnson’s experience from UAB and Clemson, where he faced higher levels of competition, may help the Hokies in their pursuit of success in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The increasing number of transfers also reflects the changing dynamics of college athletics, where players frequently seek new opportunities to showcase their talents and contribute to different programs.
