Vietnam’s President Resigns, State Media Says
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

According to state media reports on Wednesday, President Vo Van Thuong of Vietnam has resigned from his position due to violating Communist Party regulations. He is the second president to step down in just over a year, although no specific details were provided about his alleged misconduct.

While the president is part of a leadership collective that governs Vietnam, the post is mainly ceremonial, with power concentrated in the hands of the party leader, Nguyen Phu Trong. Mr. Thuong’s resignation may cause unease within the one-party system known for its unity and stability, hinting at a potential power struggle for Vietnam’s future leadership.

The resignation of Mr. Thuong, who was seen as a potential successor to Mr. Trong, could signal an escalating power struggle within the Communist Party leading up to the next leadership transition in 2026, as noted by Nguyen Khac Giang, a visiting fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.

Vietnam’s Communist Party has governed the country for nearly five decades, with Mr. Trong reappointed as general secretary in 2021. The country has been commended for balancing relations between the United States and China, attracting foreign investors due to its stable political climate.

Mr. Thuong’s resignation came after he was found to have violated party regulations, as reported by state news outlets. The move may impact the party’s reputation and stability, amidst an ongoing anti-corruption campaign that has seen the downfall of numerous top officials.

Speculation about Mr. Thuong’s potential downfall grew following the arrest of officials in Quang Ngai Province on bribery charges. The anti-corruption efforts initiated by Mr. Trong have targeted graft within the party, leading to the dismissal and imprisonment of thousands of party members.

Analysts have noted mixed results from the anti-corruption campaign, with a decrease in red tape and bribery but also a slowdown in decision-making. Mr. Thuong’s resignation over graft allegations reflects the message that no one is immune to consequences within the party.
