Chinese imports of Vietnamese lobster surged 33 times in the first nine months of this year compared to last, reaching US$205.87 million and accounting for 37% of all shipments. Despite overall consumption figures lagging, China’s voracious appetite for lobster remains strong, with overall imports increasing by 40.86% year on year to US$558.24 million, even as import prices decreased by 23%. Analysts attribute this spike to wealthy consumers’ continued demand for high-end foods, as Vietnam’s low import costs make the chitinous creatures more affordable for Chinese buyers.
