Orcas observed hunting great white sharks and consuming their livers

Some orcas in the Gulf of California have developed a unique hunting technique to prey on great white sharks by targeting their livers. Videos from 2020 and 2022 show the orcas stunning young sharks by flipping them upside down, inducing tonic immobility, before extracting their fatty organs. This behavior, previously observed only in South Africa, suggests that specific orca groups have independently learned effective hunting strategies. Climate changes may have increased encounters between these orcas and great whites in recent years.
