Vaughan Gething on Thursday made history by becoming the first Black person to lead a national government in Europe, following his election as the first minister of Wales.
Addressing the Welsh Senedd, Mr. Gething, who was born in Zambia, acknowledged the significance of his election in a country where nearly 94 percent of the population is white, according to government data.
He stated, “It is a matter of pride for a modern Wales, but also a weighty responsibility that I do not take lightly. Unfortunately, I anticipate facing abuse on social media, disguised racist comments, and questioning of my motives and nationality. Some may even accuse me of playing the race card.”
In response to his critics, Mr. Gething asserted, “It is easy to disregard identity when yours has never been doubted or hindered. I believe that Wales should be represented by all decent individuals who understand that our Parliament and government should reflect our diverse country.”
Mr. Gething, age 50, was elected leader of Wales’s Labour Party before being chosen as first minister by the Senedd. His appointment also received approval from King Charles III.
With Mr. Gething’s new role, none of the four governments in the United Kingdom are led by white men for the first time. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is of Indian descent, while Scotland’s first minister, Humza Yousaf, is of Pakistani descent. Michelle O’Neill recently became Northern Ireland’s first minister, the first Catholic to hold the position.
Mr. Sunak’s government manages civil service and government agencies for England, while Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have devolved responsibilities. Mr. Gething has been involved in politics since a young age, serving in various roles within the Welsh Parliament.
Despite facing criticism for accepting donations from a company involved in illegal waste dumping, Mr. Gething emphasized his commitment to social justice and hope for all residents of Wales, regardless of background or appearance.
