A member of the Royal Canadian Navy fell overboard while on sentry duty near Bentinck Island, off Vancouver Island, on Monday, prompting a search and rescue operation that lasted over two hours. The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre deployed multiple helicopters and vessels from Canada and the U.S. to locate the sailor, who was eventually rescued around 5 p.m. PT despite challenging conditions. Rear-Admiral David Patchell emphasized the emotional nature of the successful rescue and the importance of ongoing investment in naval training and equipment. After being rescued, the sailor was transferred to local emergency health services.
