A man was rescued by police after spending two hours in Waitematā Harbour following a kayaking incident. The police received a report around 3:40 a.m. that two men had fallen into the water while trying to reach a moored boat. One man became caught in the current and was unable to return, while the other managed to contact authorities after climbing aboard the boat two hours later. The Police Eagle helicopter was deployed to search the area, eventually locating the empty kayaks as they scoured the harbour. The senior sergeant expressed concern over the delay in reporting the incident, as it extended the time the man spent in the water and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding it.

Why It Matters

Incidents of hypothermia due to water-related accidents are a serious concern, particularly in regions with cold water temperatures like Waitematā Harbour. Hypothermia can occur within minutes of immersion in cold water, making timely rescue efforts crucial. Historical data shows that swift response times can significantly improve survival rates in such emergencies. Additionally, this situation raises awareness about the importance of safety measures when engaging in water activities, including the use of life jackets and immediate reporting of emergencies.
