Gabavics, who investigated the incident, concluded that Israel intentionally targeted Abu Akleh, who was shot 16 times while wearing a “press” vest, yet the State Department classified her death as “accidental” to avoid straining relations with Israel. He also noted that Abu Akleh is one of several American citizens killed by Israeli military actions without any accountability from the US government.
