The sanctions aim to increase pressure on Caracas, with the US also targeting a Panamanian businessman facilitating petroleum shipments for the Venezuelan government. President Trump has threatened to strike narcotics shipments from Venezuela, following the US seizure of an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast. Maduro condemned the seizure as an “act of piracy” and accused the US of wanting to steal Venezuelan oil, while US officials emphasized that the sanctions also target figures close to the Venezuelan leader.
