The US Department of Energy has started transferring 53.3 million barrels of emergency oil stockpiles to nine companies, including Trafigura Trading LLC, Marathon Petroleum Corporation, and ExxonMobil. These firms will later be required to replenish the stockpile with new barrels. This move comes after the US and Israel’s conflict with Iran caused a surge in oil prices and disruptions in global oil trade. President Trump has also pledged to waive the federal tax on petrol to address rising fuel prices. Oil prices continue to rise, with Brent crude futures exceeding $105 a barrel in Asia.

Why It Matters

The transfer of emergency oil stockpiles by the US Department of Energy is significant as it aims to address the current surge in oil prices caused by geopolitical tensions. The move also reflects the impact of the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran on global oil markets. President Trump’s decision to waive the federal tax on petrol shows efforts to alleviate public discontent over rising fuel prices. The situation highlights the importance of emergency measures to stabilize oil markets during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.
