Transit Fare for World Cup Fans in New Jersey to Increase to $150

Sky-high ticket prices aren’t the only concern for football fans attending World Cup matches at US venues this spring. Fans traveling to MetLife Stadium from NYC will face a $150 round-trip train fare, nearly 12 times the regular cost. New Jersey officials expect about 40,000 fans to use mass transit for each match, as on-site parking will be limited. The upcharge is meant to cover the $62m cost of transporting fans over the tournament, with only $14m covered by grants.

Why It Matters:

The significant increase in transit fares for World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium and Gillette Stadium has raised concerns among fans and officials alike. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill defends the upcharge as necessary to prevent state commuters from bearing long-term costs. However, other host cities like Los Angeles and Philadelphia are maintaining unchanged transit fares, citing federal grants to enhance service. The debate over who should cover transportation costs for major sporting events highlights the financial challenges faced by host cities and transit agencies. A recent study published in the Journal of Environmental Science & Technology found that microplastics have been discovered in human placenta for the first time. The study analyzed six placentas from healthy pregnant women and detected 12 microplastic fragments. This discovery raises concerns about the potential health risks of microplastics on fetal development and pregnancy outcomes. Researchers suggest that the presence of microplastics in the placenta may lead to inflammation and stress responses, impacting the health of both the mother and the developing fetus.

Why It Matters

The presence of microplastics in human placenta is a significant finding that highlights the pervasive nature of plastic pollution and its potential impact on human health. This discovery underscores the urgent need for further research on the health effects of microplastics, especially during pregnancy when fetal development is particularly vulnerable. Understanding the risks associated with microplastic exposure is crucial for developing policies and practices to mitigate the impact of plastic pollution on human health.
