US designates Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist group

The Trump administration has designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a “terrorist” group, accusing them of receiving support from Iran and carrying out violence against civilians. The State Department labeled the group as a “specially designated global terrorist” (SDGT) and will designate it as a “foreign terrorist organization” (FTO) next week. This move enables economic sanctions and makes it illegal to provide material support to the group. Muslim Brotherhood fighters in Sudan have been accused of conducting mass executions of civilians, particularly in conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group. The United Arab Emirates welcomed the US decision to blacklist the group in Sudan, citing efforts to halt violence and destabilizing activities.
