A United Nations Security Council delegation has made its first-ever visit to Syria, arriving via the Jdeidet Yabous border crossing. The delegation is set to meet Syrian officials, including President Ahmed al-Sharaa, as well as civil society members, amidst ongoing efforts to manage sectarian tensions and Israeli military incursions. Slovenia’s UN ambassador stated that the visit aims to foster dialogue and support for Syria’s transition, highlighting the significance of the current regional context. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s spokesman expressed hopes that this visit will enhance communication between the UN and Syria.
